Dr Natasha Sutherland
HCPC-registered and Chartered Counselling Psychologist (BPS)
Hello, I'm Natasha Sutherland, a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with over 16 years' experience helping adults, young people and couples navigate a wide range of psychological and emotional difficulties.
About Natasha
My Approach:
I believe that effective therapy begins with developing a shared understanding of the difficulties you're experiencing, how they have developed, and, importantly, what might be keeping them going.
Early in our work together, we'll build a personalised map of these patterns and processes, known as a formulation, which will help guide our work: identifying what to focus on, in what order, and why. We'll continue to revisit and refine this understanding as therapy progresses.
Because everyone's experiences, circumstances and needs are different, I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. My aim is to combine a thoughtful understanding of your individual difficulties with practical, evidence-based strategies that can help you make meaningful and lasting changes.
At the heart of my work is a warm, supportive and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship. I want you to feel comfortable being yourself, able to speak openly, and confident that we're working together towards goals that genuinely matter to you.
My doctoral training allows me to draw flexibly on a range of psychological models and therapeutic approaches, adapting our work to your particular needs and preferences. I am trained and experienced in cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, existential, humanistic and systemic approaches, with a particular interest in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I also have considerable experience working with neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with ADHD and autism. I recognise that neurodivergence can shape how people experience and navigate relationships, emotions, work, everyday demands and their sense of self. My approach is neurodiversity-affirming, with an emphasis on understanding your individual strengths, challenges and needs, rather than viewing difference as something requiring correction. Where helpful, we can explore difficulties with executive functioning, emotional regulation, sensory sensitivities, masking, burnout and self-esteem, adapting therapy to suit the way you think and process information.
Training and Experience:
I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at University College London (UCL), followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy at Regent's University and a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at City, University of London. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and am a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (CPsychol). I have also undertaken further specialist training in a range of evidence-based psychological therapies.
I have worked extensively within the NHS, including in one of the UK's largest specialist eating disorder services, where I was appointed as a Senior Psychologist in 2022. This has given me considerable experience supporting people with eating disorders, disordered eating, body image concerns and complex psychological difficulties, often working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated care.
Getting Started:
I appreciate that reaching out for therapy can feel like a significant step, particularly if you're unsure what to expect or whether it's the right approach for you. Finding someone you feel comfortable with is important, and there's no expectation that you'll know exactly what you want to work on before we meet.
I offer a free 20-minute introductory telephone consultation, giving us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy, answer any questions you might have, and explore whether working together feels like a good fit.
I offer sessions in person at HQ Therapy in Haggerston on Tuesday afternoons, online throughout the week, or through a combination of the two, depending on your preferences and availability.
