Choosing a therapist can feel daunting, especially if you’re new to therapy or haven’t had a good experience before. Here’s a simple way to think about it.
If you have a clear sense of what you need — a particular approach, a specific specialism, or just a strong feeling that you want a qualified practitioner — the directory is a good starting point. Browse, read profiles, and contact whoever feels right.
If you’re not sure — if you’ve tried the directory and felt overwhelmed, if previous therapy hasn’t worked, or if you’d rather have a recommendation from someone who knows the practice — a HQ Therapy service is worth the £25. Your assessor knows our therapists well and will give you an honest recommendation, not just whoever has availability.
If cost is the main factor, the low-cost programme offers the same 50-minute sessions with experienced trainee therapists working under close supervision — from £27 per session.

Questions about finding a therapist
What’s the difference between a qualified therapist and a trainee therapist?
A qualified therapist has completed their full training — typically four or more years — and holds an accredited diploma or master’s. A trainee therapist is completing their training and works under regular supervision from an experienced practitioner. Both offer the same 50-minute confidential session. Research consistently shows that supervised trainee therapy is as effective for most presentations.
How do I know which approach is right for me?
You probably don't need to know. Most people search by the issues they want help with rather than the therapeutic approach — and that's fine. If you want to understand the differences, our therapist profiles explain each practitioner's approach clearly. Our HQ Therapy Assessment can also help you decide.
Can I switch therapist if it’s not working?
Yes. It’s worth giving a relationship a few sessions before deciding, but if it genuinely isn’t right — you can say so. For qualified therapists in the directory, contact us and we’ll help you find someone else. For the low-cost programme, speak to us directly.
Do therapists at HQ work with all issues?
We have practitioners covering a wide range of presentations. Use the filter on the directory to find therapists who work with specific issues. If you're not sure, the HQ Therapy Assessment can check before making a recommendation.
I’ve had a bad experience with therapy before. Should I try again?
Previous bad experiences are one of the most common reasons people book an HQ Therapy Assessment. Your assessor will take that history seriously and use it to find someone genuinely well-suited — a different approach, a different style, or both.
