Couples Therapy & Counselling

Every relationship hits difficult patches. Couples therapy gives you a safe space to understand each other better, work through conflict, and rebuild connection — whether you're trying to repair or decide what comes next.

How Couples Therapy Works

Couples therapy involves both partners attending sessions together with a therapist who specialises in relationship dynamics. Unlike individual therapy, the focus is on the relationship itself — the patterns between you, not just the feelings within you.

Your therapist acts as a neutral third party — not taking sides, but helping you both feel heard. Sessions typically involve exploring how you communicate, what triggers conflict, and what each of you needs to feel secure in the relationship.

When Should You Consider Couples Therapy?

You don't need to be in crisis. Many couples come to therapy because they've noticed they're stuck in repetitive arguments, growing apart, or struggling to talk about what matters. Others come after a specific event — an affair, a bereavement, a new baby — that has shifted the ground beneath them. The earlier you seek support, the more there is to work with.

Common Concerns

What Couples Therapy Can Help With

Communication Breakdown

When conversations keep turning into arguments, or you've stopped talking about anything real. Therapy helps you learn to listen and be heard.

Trust & Infidelity

Rebuilding trust after betrayal is one of the hardest things a couple can do. A therapist provides the structure to do it safely.

Intimacy & Connection

When physical or emotional closeness has faded. Therapy helps you understand what's changed and find your way back to each other.

Repetitive Conflict

The same arguments, different days. Couples therapy helps you see the patterns underneath and break the cycle.

Life Transitions

New parenthood, career changes, retirement, blending families — big changes put pressure on relationships. Therapy helps you navigate them together.

Deciding What's Next

Sometimes couples therapy helps you stay together. Sometimes it helps you separate well. Either way, you make the decision with clarity, not reactivity.

Common Questions

Couples Therapy FAQs

Do you offer matching for couples therapy?

Our HQ Therapy Assessment is designed primarily for individual therapy. For couples work, we recommend browsing our therapist directory and filtering for couples therapy — you can contact therapists directly to arrange an initial session. Some of our trainees do train in relational work, so it's worth mentioning during your HQ Therapy Assessment if this is something you're interested in.

Do you offer therapy for couples or children?

Yes. Several of our qualified therapists specialise in couples counselling, and some work with children and young people. You can filter by these specialisms in our therapist directory. Our low-cost trainee programme currently focuses on individual adult therapy, though some trainees are trained in couples work — ask during your assessment if this is what you need.

How much does therapy cost at HQ Therapy?

It depends on the route you choose. Qualified therapists set their own fees, typically £50–£90 per session. Our low-cost programme with supervised trainee therapists ranges from £27 to £45 per session, depending on the number of sessions you commit to. An HQ Therapy Assessment is £25.

Does HQ Therapy offer online therapy sessions?

Yes, many HQ Therapy therapists offer secure online sessions via video call. Online therapy is available for individual, couples, and teen therapy across all programmes and pricing options.
