Group Therapy & Counselling

Group Therapy & Counselling Group therapy offers a unique healing environment where sharing experiences with others becomes part of the therapeutic process.

Group therapy allows members to practise altruism by supporting others in the group, which benefits both the helper and the recipient. Originating during World War II to address war-related mental health challenges, it is now widely recommended for many psychological and emotional difficulties.

Two Main Approaches

Psychoeducational groups

  • The therapist takes a teaching role.
  • Focus on providing information, skills, and strategies for specific issues.

Process-oriented groups

  • Focus on relationships between members and overall group dynamics.
  • The counsellor facilitates open discussion.
  • Emphasises the cathartic, healing effect of sharing problems with others.

How Group Therapy Works

Sessions can include:

  • Group discussion and sharing
  • Team-building exercises
  • Art and drama therapy
  • Narrative work (sharing and re-framing personal stories)
  • Physical or experiential activities

These activities aim to:

  • Build trust and a sense of safety
  • Boost self-confidence
  • Improve communication and interpersonal skills

Groups usually have 6–12 participants and at least one mental health professional leading or co-facilitating.

What Group Therapy Can Help With

Group Structure

  • Closed groups: The same members meet for a set period (e.g., 8–12 weeks). No new members join once the group starts.
  • Open groups: Ongoing groups where new members can join over time.

Group therapy can be used on its own or alongside individual therapy, medication, and other treatments, providing a supportive environment to learn, practise new skills, and feel less alone in your struggles.
