Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological therapy approach designed to help individuals understand and reshape the "programming" of their own minds. It examines how neurological processes, language, and behavioural patterns interact, and how these can be changed to achieve personal goals.
Origins and Foundation
NLP was developed in the 1970s at the University of California, Santa Cruz. It is based on the idea that each person maintains a unique internal "map" of reality. This map can be modified so that people can more effectively repeat past successes and avoid repeating past failures.
How NLP Works
Practitioners use language- and sensory-based techniques, such as visualisation, along with behaviour and language-modification strategies. These methods aim to help clients become aware of their internal mental frameworks and patterns. NLP seeks to build more effective communication between conscious and unconscious processes, enabling individuals to respond more flexibly and resourcefully.
What NLP Can Help With
NLP is often applied to a wide range of psychological and behavioural difficulties, including:
- Anxiety, phobias, and depression
- Panic attacks
- Communication issues
- PTSD and ADHD
- Substance abuse and addiction
- Obsessions and compulsions
