Counselling for children offers many of the same benefits as adult counselling. A child may have specific issues they need to work through (traumaabusegrief) or they may simply benefit from a safe space in which to receive emotional support.

Therapy can help children learn how to form healthy and emotionally secure relationships, how to express themselves more fully, and how to come to terms with big emotions like anxiety, sadness and fear.

It can also be an opportunity to make sure that children fully understand issues that have affected them, like bereavement and death, or divorce. Children with specific behavioural disorders, or those that are engaged in harmful behaviours like self-harm or criminality, can also benefit from therapy.

Therapists are specially trained to work with children and might use a wide range of techniques including play therapy, expressive therapy and behavioural therapy. The therapist that you choose might additionally want to see you, alone or with your child, and will keep you informed about progress, depending on the confidentiality clause that you all agree on.

Child counselling sessions usually last for 50 minutes, and sessions involving you (or more of your family) might last up to 90 minutes.
