Zoe Laxton:
Psychotherapist (BACP)
My name is Zoe Laxton, I am a registered psychotherapist and am currently completing my Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy by Professional Studies.
I work with clients in an integrative way, which means that I work with a variety of therapeutic techniques based on what is most beneficial for my clients, treating each client as an individual rather than with a one-size-fits-all approach.
In my tailored approach, I draw on elements from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Psychodynamic theory, and Existential Psychotherapy.
I use CBT to help clients change unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours that are negatively impacting their lives, to allow them to create healthier ways of thinking and acting, as well as helping clients learn and implement skills to manage their difficulties such as problematic anxiety.
DBT also offers a way for clients to learn coping skills to help with problematic behaviours but focuses more on helping clients who experience emotions intensely, accept their emotional experiences and respond to these intense emotions in healthy ways.
Often, clients can feel ‘stuck’ and that something is ‘not quite right’ and can benefit from exploring their unconscious and bringing it into the conscious to help resolve underlying issues which can impact how they feel and behave, which is where my use of psychodynamic theory comes into sessions.
I also use psychodynamic elements when working with clients who have experienced childhood trauma and have challenging relationships with themselves and others around them. As we are all unique individuals with our own experiences, my use of existential therapy can help clients understand their place in their world and find meaning and freedom in their lives.
I am trained in working with a wide range of difficulties people experience with their mental health, with a specific interest in childhood trauma and attachment-related issues.
These often end up impacting individuals in many areas of their lives, such as problems in relationships, intense feelings of anxiety and depression, and an unstable sense of self, which is also where my tailored approach and therapeutic style help clients experiencing these issues.
By exploring the issues clients bring to therapy in a safe and supportive space, I work with individuals to make sense of their experiences and collaborate with each client towards achieving positive results and change in their lives.
