Matthew Daniel Therapeutic Counsellor Hackney London E8Matthew Daniel:

Therapeutic Counsellor (MBACP)

Therapy creates a unique space in our lives. Often it’s where we find we can be most open and honest, where we learn important things about ourselves and where we’re able to see more clearly what we want and need. And it’s a place where positive changes in our lives begin to happen.

Change is at the heart of therapy. We may want to change our habits and patterns, our relationship dynamics, even the trajectory of our life entirely. Or it might be an internal change we seek, transforming the way we feel about ourselves and the past, how we experience daily situations, and how we think about our future.

My role is to help create that unique space with you. I’m a qualified integrative therapeutic counsellor, which means a range of therapeutic tools and ideas are available to us.

I have experience working with anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, loss and relationship issues. I’ve worked for a number of years with individuals struggling with addiction, negative patterns of thinking and complex trauma.

Sometimes people come to therapy just feeling a bit lost or dissatisfied. In all cases, therapy can be a transformative place where the change we need can begin to occur.

Working together:
Everyone’s different, so I begin therapy by getting to know you more deeply, understanding what’s brought you to therapy, and what you wish to focus on, and then we can agree upon how we can best work together. Integrative therapy allows for a flexible approach to suit your needs, for example:

  • You may be looking for plenty of space to talk and reflect about things in an entirely supportive, confidential and non-judgemental environment, where you can process difficult past experiences and day-to-day situations.
  • You may wish to investigate aspects of your life such as patterns and habits, or delve into areas of tension which you don’t fully understand, gaining insight into who you are, how you’ve been shaped, and what you really need.
  • You may want an emphasis on practical solutions to issues you’ve identified in your life, with tools and techniques from therapies such as CBT, ACT or mindfulness-based approaches to help you move forward.

The reality is that often these activities overlap and interact, and each might be more important at different times in our therapy. It’s always a collaborative process so we’ll frequently review what we’re doing, how you feel about it and where we should go next.

Therapy is different for everyone, but there are fundamental features you can expect. I’ll listen with care and empathy to anything you share, we’ll explore deeply the situations and relationships that you feel are important, and what you need and want can find expression.

Where to begin:
It’s vital in therapy that you feel you trust your therapist and can develop a good working relationship. A good way to get a sense of this is through a consultation session. I offer free consultations, lasting approximately 20 minutes, by phone or video call.

  • If you feel comfortable you can explain why you’re seeking therapy and what you’re looking for.
  • You can hear about my approach and ask questions.
  • We can have an initial discussion about how we might work together.

If you then decide to proceed with therapy our sessions would be weekly, on the same day and time (which we would agree together), and would cost £65 per session. Sessions can be either in person or online.

If you’d like to have a free consultation please contact me with your availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Seek Therapy?

Many people, new to this type of help, believe that they need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems”, or be in crisis in order for therapy and counselling to be appropriate for them. This is a common misconception; anyone can benefit from therapy when it comes to helping you deal with your personal feelings and problems, make positive changes in your life, and understand yourself better.

So what is therapy and counselling? If you’re new to this world then the first steps can sometimes be the most difficult. Therapy can be a very effective treatment for a whole range of personal problems covering areas from physical and emotional problems, different types of behavioural disorders, through to human sexuality issues and a host of wellbeing and complementary therapy techniques.

Any problem you have that is causing you concern, anxiety or distress is a valid and appropriate reason to reach out and find a therapist and talk to them about it. Far from something to be ashamed of, acknowledging your vulnerability and asking for help is a sign of maturity and strength.

If you feel that you have a desire and are committed to making changes in your life in order to overcome your current problems and achieve more long-term satisfaction, psychological wellbeing and personal fulfilment, then you are ready to seek therapy. We are here to help you work through a wide range of therapy issues that might be troubling you.

Will Information About Me Be Safe & Secure?

It is quite normal to be hesitant when it comes to sharing private and intimate information about yourself with a stranger. You may fear that you will receive judgment from your therapist, or that your therapist will share your details with others.

HQ Therapy Rooms takes your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Our therapists are required to keep everything said in therapy sessions between you, just like your doctor is required to keep your records private.

For therapy to be effective, there must be unconditional trust built between you and your therapist, and this relies on a shared understanding of confidentiality. It applies to the outside world as well: it is standard practice for therapists not to acknowledge their clients if they run into them outside of the therapy rooms in order to help protect their client’s confidentiality. Read our full privacy policy for more information.
