Martyn Fitzgerald Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor Highbury London E8Martyn Fitzgerald:

Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor (BACP)

Hello, my name is Martyn Fitzgerald, and I’m a qualified integrative counsellor registered with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).

Integrative simply means that I work with different therapeutic approaches depending on the situation and issues being brought. I currently see clients face-to-face at HQ Therapy Highbury, and online.

I’m aware there are a myriad of reasons why you may be looking for therapy. These can range from bereavement to anxiety, relationship issues, low self-worth, early life trauma, sexuality, self-harm, depression, and other issues as numerous and as unique as you.

Any of these can and often are experienced simultaneously and may leave us feeling overwhelmed and sometimes at a loss as to how to cope.

Therapy is not a cure-all, and it is not for everyone, but for those willing, it can be an opportunity to explore what you are experiencing with curiosity and empathy and to be heard with non-judgement. It can be a significant step towards alleviating your stress and psychic pain.

The idea of starting therapy may feel daunting, and if you’ve not experienced it before, the concept of it may even feel strange – to share your innermost thoughts and feelings with someone you currently don’t know. My clinical supervisor calls it the ‘bizarre relationship’, and looking from the outside in it can appear that way – it is certainly unique and unlike any we have in any other area of our life.

What it offers is a space where you are deeply heard and respected and where you can share whatever is on your mind without fear of judgment. Successful therapy is collaborative and rooted in trust between us, and from the start I work to provide a safe and holding environment to foster this.

To help us decide if we think we could create a good working relationship, I offer a free 20-25 minute phone or video consultation. This gives me an opportunity to get a better understanding of what you are experiencing and if I feel I am right for you, and you a sense of me and how I work.

Should you wish to go ahead sessions would happen weekly at the same time and day either online or in-person. My fee is £65, although I am open to discussing this for those on low income.

Whether it is with me or another therapist, I am glad that you are looking for someone to talk to and that you have taken the decision for change. Whatever it is you are currently facing, you are choosing you and taking a step towards a more fulfilling, less stressful life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Seek Therapy?

Many people, new to this type of help, believe that they need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems”, or be in crisis in order for therapy and counselling to be appropriate for them. This is a common misconception; anyone can benefit from therapy when it comes to helping you deal with your personal feelings and problems, make positive changes in your life, and understand yourself better.

So what is therapy and counselling? If you’re new to this world then the first steps can sometimes be the most difficult. Therapy can be a very effective treatment for a whole range of personal problems covering areas from physical and emotional problems, different types of behavioural disorders, through to human sexuality issues and a host of wellbeing and complementary therapy techniques.

Any problem you have that is causing you concern, anxiety or distress is a valid and appropriate reason to reach out and find a therapist and talk to them about it. Far from something to be ashamed of, acknowledging your vulnerability and asking for help is a sign of maturity and strength.

If you feel that you have a desire and are committed to making changes in your life in order to overcome your current problems and achieve more long-term satisfaction, psychological wellbeing and personal fulfilment, then you are ready to seek therapy. We are here to help you work through a wide range of therapy issues that might be troubling you.

Will Information About Me Be Safe & Secure?

It is quite normal to be hesitant when it comes to sharing private and intimate information about yourself with a stranger. You may fear that you will receive judgment from your therapist, or that your therapist will share your details with others.

HQ Therapy Rooms takes your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Our therapists are required to keep everything said in therapy sessions between you, just like your doctor is required to keep your records private.

For therapy to be effective, there must be unconditional trust built between you and your therapist, and this relies on a shared understanding of confidentiality. It applies to the outside world as well: it is standard practice for therapists not to acknowledge their clients if they run into them outside of the therapy rooms in order to help protect their client’s confidentiality. Read our full privacy policy for more information.
