Julia Baker Psychodynamic Psychotherapist Hackney London E8Julia Baker:

Trainee Psychodynamic Psychotherapist (BPC student member)

My name is Julia Baker, and I am a trainee Psychodynamic Psychotherapist. I offer therapy sessions with adult clients through the Low-cost Counselling and Psychotherapy Service at Haggerston on Sundays between 4 pm and 7 pm.

I have had a rich and varied life and lived and worked in multiple countries, in my 50s, I felt a strong calling to pursue a new career as a therapist. This journey has been deeply fulfilling, building on my lifelong curiosity about the human experience and my commitment to helping others.

I’ve completed a one-year Foundation Course in Psychotherapy and Counselling and am now continuing my journey with clinical training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at the British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF). This training is accredited by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), and I follow their professional code of ethics to ensure a safe and supportive space for my clients.

My Approach:
People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons—whether it’s to work through feelings of anxiety, find clarity during a tough time, making sense of low moods and challenging relationships, or simply better understand themselves. Whatever brings you here, my goal is to create a warm, welcoming space where you feel safe to explore your thoughts and emotions. Imagine this as a space where we can take a closer look at your inner world together, with curiosity and compassion, to uncover insights and help you move forward in a way that feels meaningful for you.

I work with a psychodynamic approach that helps you deepen your self-awareness and understanding. This approach goes beyond surface-level issues, delving into the often-hidden layers of your mind where the roots of current struggles may lie. By exploring these deeper layers, we can uncover the emotions, patterns, and experiences that shape your life, allowing us to address challenges at their core. This process can open the door to meaningful insights and lasting change. Psychodynamic therapy is particularly effective for issues like anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties, as well as broader life concerns such as feeling stuck, a loss of direction, or struggles with finding purpose.

I provide a collaborative and open space where you’re free to explore whatever feels most important to you. Together, we’ll work on uncovering your unique story and finding the insights that matter to you. My goal is to support you on your path of self-discovery, helping you gain clarity, confidence, and a deeper sense of purpose so you can move toward a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Experience and Education:
I am currently undertaking clinical training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at the British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF), working toward accreditation with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).

In addition to my formal training, I have completed courses and gained experience through charitable placements with organizations such as Macmillan Cancer Support, an independent school (as a governor), and I am soon joining Home-Start, supporting families with at least one child under the age of five.

Building on a wealth of diverse life experiences, I am able to connect with clients from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. It is a privilege to accompany my clients on their journey of self-discovery, and I look forward to offering the same support and understanding to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Seek Therapy?

Many people, new to this type of help, believe that they need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems”, or be in crisis in order for therapy and counselling to be appropriate for them. This is a common misconception; anyone can benefit from therapy when it comes to helping you deal with your personal feelings and problems, make positive changes in your life, and understand yourself better.

So what is therapy and counselling? If you’re new to this world then the first steps can sometimes be the most difficult. Therapy can be a very effective treatment for a whole range of personal problems covering areas from physical and emotional problems, different types of behavioural disorders, through to human sexuality issues and a host of wellbeing and complementary therapy techniques.

Any problem you have that is causing you concern, anxiety or distress is a valid and appropriate reason to reach out and find a therapist and talk to them about it. Far from something to be ashamed of, acknowledging your vulnerability and asking for help is a sign of maturity and strength.

If you feel that you have a desire and are committed to making changes in your life in order to overcome your current problems and achieve more long-term satisfaction, psychological wellbeing and personal fulfilment, then you are ready to seek therapy. We are here to help you work through a wide range of therapy issues that might be troubling you.

Will Information About Me Be Safe & Secure?

It is quite normal to be hesitant when it comes to sharing private and intimate information about yourself with a stranger. You may fear that you will receive judgment from your therapist, or that your therapist will share your details with others.

HQ Therapy Rooms takes your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Our therapists are required to keep everything said in therapy sessions between you, just like your doctor is required to keep your records private.

For therapy to be effective, there must be unconditional trust built between you and your therapist, and this relies on a shared understanding of confidentiality. It applies to the outside world as well: it is standard practice for therapists not to acknowledge their clients if they run into them outside of the therapy rooms in order to help protect their client’s confidentiality. Read our full privacy policy for more information.
