What Is Bioenergetic Analysis?: Based on the premise that the mind and the body function as one, bioenergetic analysis focuses on the energy that flows between the two, identifying areas of distress or disharmony, and working to bring your whole self into alignment.
Bioenergetics (a field in biochemistry and cell biology that concerns energy flow through living systems) is a form of psychodynamic psychotherapy and is useful for individuals who are suffering from neurotic and psychosomatic disorders. It was developed by Alexander Lowen, an American physician and psychotherapist in the 1950s, after he moved on on from long-time working partner and psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich. Lowen’s theories for this modality were influenced by Reich’s ideas during their time together.
How Does Bioenergetic Analysis Work?: A bioenergetic analyst will work with you to identify where physical or emotional distress manifests in your body, and why it does so, and use a combination of psychoanalysis, relational therapy and bodywork to help you reintegrate your bodily responses.
This is seen as an important step in overcoming feelings, behaviours, phobias, obsessions or compulsions, and attitudes that detract from life and results in an improved and embodied state of being. Bioenergetics therapy is often regarded by its practitioners as an adventure in self-discovery.
