Ama Dankwa Integrative Counsellor / Therapist (BACP) & Trainee Counselling Psychologist & PsychotherapistAma Dankwa:

Integrative Counsellor / Therapist (BACP) & Trainee Counselling Psychologist & Psychotherapist

Hi, my name is Ama Dankwa, and I am a qualified counsellor/therapist and trainee Counselling Psychologist who values using various forms of therapy and theory to elevate the mental health needs of others. This can include person-centred, psychodynamic, cultural competency, cognitive behavioural therapy, systemic, solution-focused, trauma-informed practice, play and creative therapy.

In addition to these approaches as part of my doctorate in counselling psychology training, my therapeutic work also involves Existential Psychotherapy, where we can explore the meaning-making of your lived experience in the world.

These different modalities and approaches can all be applied as and when to suit your individual needs during therapy. In practice this could look like exploring whether to use creative therapy, talking therapy or bringing more awareness to your body, as I believe it’s important to stay with your mode of expression without judgement.

My way of working also includes valuing and considering the impact of your intersectionality (parts of your identity e.g. race, religion, gender, class, sexuality etc) on identity, world views and experiences within the world.

In my therapeutic work, I specialise in supporting clients with anxiety, depression, school/career transitions, academic/work stress, self-esteem, anger, race/identity, domestic abuse/violence, relationship breakdowns and behavioural difficulties.

My varied counselling experience also includes supporting clients with suicidal ideation, self-harm, trauma, bereavement, racism, sexism, bullying, divorce/separation, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, selective mutism, social-emotional mental health needs, looked-after children, housing difficulties, sleep issues, eating difficulties or disorders, body image, identity, autism, attention deficit disorder and health conditions.

Although I will be providing therapeutic support to Adults specifically, I have great experience working with children, young people as well as adults in short, medium, and long-term work. These sessions were also carried out in person within private practice settings, school settings, remotely/online and telephone.

My work experience with children and adolescents also allows me to support adults in greater detail around inner child work, if and when this is desired to be explored by yourself as the client.

Therapy can be an empowering process that can come with a sense of challenge, growth and change starting from a choice to give yourself space in therapy to engage with yourself and your experiences. This choice you will make is one that I will support and value throughout the therapeutic process in a collaborative and compassionate way.

Thank you for reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Seek Therapy?

Many people, new to this type of help, believe that they need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems”, or be in crisis in order for therapy and counselling to be appropriate for them. This is a common misconception; anyone can benefit from therapy when it comes to helping you deal with your personal feelings and problems, make positive changes in your life, and understand yourself better.

So what is therapy and counselling? If you’re new to this world then the first steps can sometimes be the most difficult. Therapy can be a very effective treatment for a whole range of personal problems covering areas from physical and emotional problems, different types of behavioural disorders, through to human sexuality issues and a host of wellbeing and complementary therapy techniques.

Any problem you have that is causing you concern, anxiety or distress is a valid and appropriate reason to reach out and find a therapist and talk to them about it. Far from something to be ashamed of, acknowledging your vulnerability and asking for help is a sign of maturity and strength.

If you feel that you have a desire and are committed to making changes in your life in order to overcome your current problems and achieve more long-term satisfaction, psychological wellbeing and personal fulfilment, then you are ready to seek therapy. We are here to help you work through a wide range of therapy issues that might be troubling you.

Will Information About Me Be Safe & Secure?

It is quite normal to be hesitant when it comes to sharing private and intimate information about yourself with a stranger. You may fear that you will receive judgment from your therapist, or that your therapist will share your details with others.

HQ Therapy Rooms takes your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Our therapists are required to keep everything said in therapy sessions between you, just like your doctor is required to keep your records private.

For therapy to be effective, there must be unconditional trust built between you and your therapist, and this relies on a shared understanding of confidentiality. It applies to the outside world as well: it is standard practice for therapists not to acknowledge their clients if they run into them outside of the therapy rooms in order to help protect their client’s confidentiality. Read our full privacy policy for more information.
