Katie Manning:
Trainee Psychodynamic Psychotherapist (BPC student member)
My name is Katie Manning and I am a trainee Psychodynamic Psychotherapist. I work at the low-cost counselling and psychotherapy services at HQ Therapy Rooms in Haggerston and Dalston, London.
I work with adult clients, on a once-weekly basis. I have face-to-face sessions available on a Friday evening.
I am training at The British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF) to qualify as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist. The BPF is governed by the British Psychotherapy Council (BPC) and I adhere to the BPC code of ethics.
I work within a psychodynamic approach, which means that building a trusting relationship between client and therapist is part of establishing a safe and connected space so that difficult feelings and experiences can be explored.
A psychodynamic approach can also help to make sense of current feelings or behaviour in context with early experiences and relationships. Another way of thinking about this approach can be ‘trying to get to the root of the issue’.
There might be particular issues or experiences you want to discuss or you might come with a feeling of not quite knowing what to say, but that you want some time to make sense of your life experiences and increase your self-awareness.
Making the decision to come for therapy can feel like a big decision and might raise questions in your mind if this is the right time, or the right type of therapy.
I believe it’s important to find a therapist who you feel comfortable sitting with, as well as knowing that it can also take some time to build trust in the relationship.
I would encourage anyone who is feeling unsure about starting therapy to come to a session and start to explore some of these feelings.
A bit more about me:
I have volunteered as a listener for The Samaritans and am now volunteering as a telephone counsellor for a domestic abuse charity.
As well as my current clinical training, I have also completed a certificate course to understand more about couples counselling, as well as another certificate course focused on the emotional care of babies, children, young people & families. These have all been with a psychodynamic approach.
